A new pyramid has just been discovered in Egypt. Egyptian archaeologists announced yesterday they have discovered the remains of a pyramid built for an ancient queen over 4000 years ago. The pyramid was found south of Cairo about two months ago. It was buried in the desert near the famous Step Pyramid. It is thought to house the remains of Queen Sesheshet who was the mother of King Teti from the Sixth Dynasty. The headless, five-metre high pyramid originally reached about 14 metres, with sides of 22 metres. Egypt's Culture Minister Farouk Hosni is given a tour of the excavation site. The pyramid, the 118th found in Egypt, was uncovered near the world's oldest pyramid at Saqqara, which was a burial ground for the rulers of ancient Egypt. [Dr. Zahi Hawass, Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities]: "I have been excavating with my Egyptian team in this site for the last twenty years, since 1988, and we rediscovered in this area two pyramids - one belongs to a king of dynasty five and one belongs to the main queen of king Teti, the first King of Dynasty six. But today we took about twenty meters of sand and we found under the sand this new pyramid." Archaeologists plan to enter the pyramid's burial chamber within two weeks, although most of its contents are likely to have been taken by thieves. Artifacts found in the pyramid indicate that the burial ground may have been reused during Roman times.
