In 1977, NASA launched two small spacecraft called Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Weighing only 800 kgs each, they collected a wealth of scientific data and thousands of photographs of the four giant planets in our Solar System. After visiting Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1's trajectory left the ecliptic plane in order to photograph Saturn's moon Titan. This meant that Voyager 1 would not visit any other planets. However, Voyager 2 continued on to visit Uranus and Neptune. Still today, Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have visited these two "ice giants" and their moons. This music is dedicated to the two Voyager spacecraft and to the people who made them possible. This song is recorded on golden CDs and is on the spacecrafts Voyager 1 and 2 as a message of the human nation to other civilizations. The song is from the Rhodope region The Power of the Human Voice The Voyager Golden Record is a phonograph record included in the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. It contains sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth. It is intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or far future humans, that may find it. The Voyager spacecraft will take about 40000 years to come near another star, 'near' meaning in this case within around 1.7 light-years' distance; hence, if other beings do not come in the direction of the spacecraft to meet them, it will take at least that long for the Golden Record to be found. As the probes are extremely small compared to the vastness of interstellar space, it is extraordinarily unlikely that they will ever be intercepted. If they are ever found by an alien species, it will be far in the future, and thus the record is best seen as a symbolic statement rather than a serious attempt to communicate with aliens. The contents of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University. Dr. Sagan and his associates assembled 115 images and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by surf, wind, and thunder, and animal sounds, including the songs of birds and whales. To this they added musical selections from different ...

| Giant Ribbon Discovered at the Edge of the Solar System |

October 15, 2009: For years, researchers have known that the solar system is surrounded by a vast bubble of magnetism. Called the "heliosphere," it springs from the sun and extends far beyond the orbit of Pluto, providing a first line of defense against cosmic rays and interstellar clouds that try to enter our local space. Although the heliosphere is huge and literally fills the sky, it emits no light and no one has actually seen it. Until now. NASA's IBEX (Interstellar Boundary Explorer) spacecraft has made the first all-sky maps of the heliosphere and the results have taken researchers by surprise. The maps are bisected by a bright, winding ribbon of unknown origin: Above: IBEX's all-sky map of energetic neutral atom emission reveals a bright filament of unknown origin. V1 and V2 indicate the positions of the Voyager spacecraft. [more] "This is a shocking new result," says IBEX principal investigator Dave McComas of the Southwest Research Institute. "We had no idea this ribbon existed--or what has created it. Our previous ideas about the outer heliosphere are going to have to be revised." Sign up for EXPRESS SCIENCE NEWS delivery Although the ribbon looks bright in the IBEX map, it does not glow in any conventional sense. The ribbon is not a source of light, but rather a source of particles--energetic neutral atoms or ENAs. IBEX's sensors can detect these particles, which are produced in the outer heliosphere where the solar wind begins to slow down and mix with ...

Visit the Voyager web site at voyager.jpl.nasa.gov to catch up on the status of the Voyager spacecraft. Voyager 1 and 2 have been operational for over 12000 days, and Voyager 2 is now exploring the outermost region of our solar system. Voyager 2 was launched on August 20, 1977, back in the days when my favorite hangout was the Planetarium.

Opening song from Quijote Transandino's concert in Croatian History Museum in May 2009. This wedding tune from Peru is recorded on the so-called Golden Record which is right now travelling out of our Solar System aboard Voyager spacecraft. Golden Record is a collection of all kinds of music from Earth (classical, pop, traditional) compiled by Carl Sagan in the 70ies for extraterrestrials who might one day stumble upon Voyager spacecraft. In this song a woman, now a wife, sings about how she's been tricked into marriage and she can't believe how foolish she was... :)
